About Us | UCLA Blood and Platelet Center

Mission Statement

It is the mission of the UCLA Blood & Platelet Center to provide an adequate and safe supply of blood for our patients. We pride ourselves in providing donors with a rewarding donation experience.

In 1975, UCLA's Blood & Platelet Center opened its doors for the first time.

About UsBack then we collected blood specifically for patients undergoing orthopedic surgery, however we have grown remarkably since then. Today we are responsible for maintaining a healthy blood supply for patients at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and Santa Monica UCLA Hospitals.

The UCLA Blood & Platelet Center collects approximately 30,000 volunteer whole blood and platelet donations per year. These donations yield 60% of the 100,000 blood products that are transfused at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and Santa Monica Hospitals. We play an essential role in assuring that surgery and critical therapies can be carried out with a minimal risk of delays or cancellations due to blood shortages.

At the UCLA Blood & Platelet Center we are committed to increasing community blood donations. Why? Because here in the Los Angeles area, residents donate blood at the lowest rate of any city in the nation, making the region and our patients dependent on blood imported from other areas of the country.

The need for blood is never-ending. At UCLA, our Level 1 Trauma Center safeguards the health of over 4 million people in western Los Angeles County. Our Transplant Teams perform approximately 1000 organ transplants yearly. And our Oncology Department performs a vast number of life saving procedures for both pediatric and adult cancer patients. We believe that the needs of these and other Los Angeles area patients can be met by increasing donations from within our own Los Angeles community.

Here at UCLA's Blood & Platelet Center we think each donor is a hero. And we're not the only ones who think so. The patients at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center who receive our donors' blood and/or platelets, think so too. It all comes down to saving a life. That's what you're helping to do every time you donate blood. It's as simple as that, as important as that and as heroic as that.
